Ph.D. Candidate Qualification Assessment Implementation Guidelines

Ph.D. Candidate Qualification Assessment Implementation Guidelines.

  1. The purpose of these implementation guidelines is to establish the procedures for conducting the qualification assessment of Ph.D. candidates in the Semiconductor Technology Ph.D. Program (hereinafter referred to as "the Program") of Minghsin University of Science and Technology, a legal entity of Minghsin Foundation of Science and Technology.

  2. A Ph.D. candidate in the Program must pass the qualification assessment and complete the required courses for the Ph.D. degree (excluding the Ph.D. dissertation) in order to be eligible for the Ph.D. candidate examination in the Program.

  3. The qualification assessment consists of three subjects, and students may choose to take a written examination, apply for course exemptions, an oral examination, or a combination of these methods. The assessment scores for each subject are based on a scale of 100, with a passing grade of 70. Ph.D. students must complete the qualification assessment within five semesters of enrollment. Failure to do so will result in dismissal from the Program.

  4. The selection of subjects for the qualification assessment of Ph.D. students requires the approval of their advisor. Students who have not designated an advisor are not eligible to apply for the qualification examination.

  5. The subjects for the qualification assessment in the Program are selected by the graduate students themselves from the courses offered by the Program or the various research institutes in the College of Semiconductor Technology. However, selected subjects must not be project discussions or language courses. Additionally, if the instructor of a subject chosen for the qualification assessment is the student's advisor, a maximum of two subjects may be selected.

  6. Application for the written examination or oral examination as part of the qualification assessment: The Program accepts applications for the qualification assessment of Ph.D. students from the beginning of each semester until the 6th week, and no late applications will be accepted. The qualification assessment, either written or oral, is conducted in the 10th week of each semester. If the instructor of a subject chosen for the qualification assessment is the student's advisor, only one subject may be selected. When applying for an oral examination as part of the qualification assessment, in addition to the teaching instructor, the Program Director must appoint two other faculty members with relevant expertise to form the examination committee for that subject.

  7. Application for course exemptions as part of the qualification assessment: (a) The subject chosen by the Ph.D. student for the qualification assessment must be a course taken during their Ph.D. program, and a score of at least 35% or 85 points (inclusive) in that subject is considered a pass in the qualification assessment. The application must include transcripts from previous years and supporting evidence approved by the teaching instructor, with the semester grade in that subject serving as the assessment score for the qualification assessment subject. (b) For subjects applied for course exemptions, if the instructor of the subject is the student's advisor, only one subject may be selected.

  8. These guidelines shall be implemented after being discussed and approved by the Program Committee and shall also apply to any future amendments.
