History

With the influence of offshore relocations of Taiwan’s manufacturing industry, the manpower demand for local industries has shifted to the service sector step by step over the past few decades. Likewise, the industrial characteristic of the Hsinchu area has changed from technology as its mainstream in the past to emerging service by gradual expansion and development. In particular, the manpower demand for logistics, retail, and marketing fields continues to grow rapidly.

To meet the spirit of technological and vocational education, therefore, that the educational objective of a department should integrate with the industrial development trend and provide required human resources at the right time, we had begun carrying out the transformation for our department’s future development since 2010 before we got the approval of such transformation in 2014 from the Ministry of Education as well as for renaming it Department of Marketing and Logistics Management.

The renaming task was completed through 9 internal meetings on campus. To begin with, both the positioning and the development direction of the department were established at the Department Development Committee meeting on Nov. 27, 2012 and the College Development Committee meeting on Dec. 21, 2012, then followed by a Department-based Curriculum meeting on Dec. 26, 2012 that cooperates to discuss adjustments of our program curriculum. On Feb. 27, 2013, the department affairs meeting passed the resolution, changing the name of the Department of International Business to the Department of Marketing and Logistics Management. Then the Department Program Affairs Committee discussed and modified the curriculum again on Mar. 06, 2013. The department’s resolution was then passed at the administrative meeting and the affairs meeting of the  School of Management on Apr. 10, 2013 and Apr. 24, 2013, respectively, and at the administrative meeting and the affairs meeting of the University on May 14, 2013 and Jun. 19, 2013, respectively. Lastly, this resolution was submitted to the Ministry of Education and got approved.

To assure student’s study rights after department’s name change, the department chair then publicly explained how the University would cooperate on program study, course waiver, graduation certificate, graduation credit, graduation diploma, and so on. In addition, class mentors would further explain details to students and reply questions that students asked as well as give guidance to students for their future employment. Complying with relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education about a department’s name change, the department’s name on the diploma was shown as the Department of Marketing and Logistics Management, with a note “formerly the Department of International Business” for students who graduated in the 2014 to 2016 academic years since such name had been publicly agreed by all students’ vote. According to a survey in the last 3 years, about 38% of our department’s students graduating in the 2016 to 2018 academic years work in the marketing/sales and the  logistics/transportation fields, the main employment areas most corresponding to our department’s educational objective, followed by 17% in the manufacturing field and 45% in the other service industry fields such as banking and finance, catering and tourism, etc., indicating the result from renaming and transformation of our department fairly aligns with students’ career development fields.

At present, there are 12 classes in our department, of which 8 classes are in the four-year full-time technical programs and 4 classes in the four-year continuing education technical programs, with a total of 10 full-time teachers. The department is located on the sixth floor of the College of Management building. On this separate floor, there are 40 rooms, including teachers’ research labs, to meet different needs for all. With public spaces for stairs and elevators, etc. counted, the total floor area of our department is 2,114 square meters.
